Komodo Diving Package FAQ

The most-asked questions on Komodo dive packages cover minimum certification (Open Water for central sites, AOW for north pinnacles), current difficulty rating per site (1-5 scale, max 4-5 at Castle Rock and Cauldron), manta and shark seasonality, gear and Nitrox availability, flight-after-dive timing, and snorkeler-friendly options for non-diving partners. Below, the technical and logistical Q&A every diver asks before locking a Komodo package. Twelve questions answered with diver-voice precision — no generic travel-blog filler.

What is the minimum certification level required for a Komodo dive package?
Open Water Diver (PADI/SSI/NAUI/SDI/CMAS Level 1) is the minimum for the 3D2N Quick Dive and most of the 5D4N Signature tier. We require at least 10 logged dives within the past 24 months and recommend 20+. Advanced Open Water (AOW) is mandatory for north-pinnacle days at Castle Rock, Crystal Rock and the Cauldron — these sites carry currents rated 4-5/5 plus 25-30m operational depth. AOW + 50 logged dives + buoyancy-control specialty is recommended for the 7D Atlas Explorer tier. We accept all major recreational agencies but ask for cert card photo, last-dive date and last-medical date with booking.
How would you rate currents on Komodo dive sites?
We use a 1-5 scale. 1/5 = Pink Beach, Sebayur (aquarium calm). 2/5 = Tatawa Besar, Manta Alley, Pillarsteen (mild drift, SMB on ascent). 3/5 = Tatawa Kecil, Crystal Rock, Batu Bolong (predictable, drift-dive briefing useful). 4/5 = Castle Rock, the Cauldron (Shotgun) — negative entry, reef hook, briefing-critical. 5/5 = full-moon Castle Rock and Cauldron on outgoing tide — operators may abort and substitute. Our briefings always include current direction, abort points, lost-buddy procedure and SMB-deployment depth. Don’t dive Komodo north pinnacles if you’ve never deployed an SMB in current.
What’s the manta and shark season at Komodo?
Reef manta rays (Mobula alfredi) congregate at southern cleaning stations year-round but peak December-March (85-95% sighting probability per dive at Manta Alley) due to plankton blooms in cooler currents. April-November sightings drop to 50-70%. White-tip and grey reef sharks are present year-round at Castle Rock, Crystal Rock and Cauldron — peak action July-August aligned with strong-current pelagic feeding. Eagle rays seasonal April-November in central park. Whale sharks rare in Komodo (Cendrawasih Bay is the better whale shark destination in eastern Indonesia). For mola-mola, choose Bali Nusa Penida August-October; Komodo is not a mola destination.
Is gear rental included? Can I bring my own?
Full BCD, regulator with octopus, 5mm wetsuit, dive computer, mask, fins, snorkel and SMB are included in all package tiers. We use Apeks, Mares and Scubapro reg sets serviced annually; BCDs are Aqualung Pro HD or Mares Pure SLS. DIN and yoke first-stages both available — flag in booking. 12L and 15L aluminium tanks; 12L on request only. If you bring your own gear, we offer a USD 60-150 reduction (depending on tier) but rarely the full rental cost back — operators absorb fixed shop overhead. Bring your own mask, computer and fins regardless; the shop’s mask might not fit, and dive computers personalise to your nitrogen profile.
Is Nitrox available? Do I need to be Nitrox-certified?
Yes — 32% Nitrox standard, 36% on request. USD 12/fill in 2026 (USD 24 / 96 / 144 add-on for tier 1/2/3 respectively). Nitrox certification (PADI Enriched Air Diver, SSI Nitrox, etc.) is required to use Nitrox fills. We can run a Nitrox specialty during your package — 2 days, USD 195 add-on, theory + 2 dives on Nitrox. Nitrox extends bottom time on north-site repeat dives at 25-30m and reduces post-dive fatigue across the trip — particularly worth it on 5D and 7D tiers.
How long should I wait between my last dive and my flight home?
DAN (Divers Alert Network) recommends 18 hours minimum after a single no-decompression dive and 24 hours after multi-day repetitive diving. Our 5D and 7D packages structure the last dive day to end at ~15:00, then a hotel night and morning departure — typically 18-22 hours. For divers flying to high-altitude airports (Jakarta CGK is sea-level, but onward connections via Denpasar may transit higher), we recommend the full 24-hour buffer. We’ll never schedule a final dive within 18 hours of a flight; if your departure forces it, we cut your last day to morning-only or rest.
Are the dive sites snorkeler-friendly? Can my non-diving partner come?
Yes. Pink Beach, Manta Alley (surface swim with mantas, peak December-March), Mawan, Sebayur and Tatawa Besar all offer 1-2m visibility down to 8-12m and snorkel-quality surface conditions. Speedboats accommodate snorkelers on dive days at no extra cost; gear (mask + snorkel + fins + 3mm shorty) rents at USD 15/day. We also run dedicated snorkel-only days for non-divers covering Padar viewpoint, Pink Beach lunch, Manta Alley surface and Komodo island dragon trek combination — USD 125/day per non-diver. Suit non-divers wanting to share the trip without certification.
What’s the typical group size on the dive boat?
We cap speedboats at 8 divers maximum. Typical group sizes by season: peak July-August 6-8 divers, shoulder April-June and October-November 4-6, low season December-March often 3-5 divers. Dive guide ratio strict at 1:4 maximum — meaning two PADI Divemasters or Instructors on a full boat of 8. Private dive guide upgrade (USD 75/day) eliminates buddy-pairing variance and dedicates one Instructor to your group only. Worth it for couples wanting matched pace, photographers needing flexibility, or AOW students wanting more attention on north-site days.
What languages do dive instructors speak?
All our partner shops have English-speaking PADI Divemasters and Instructors as standard. Many staff are bilingual — Bahasa Indonesia + English, with several speaking French, German, Italian, Mandarin or Japanese. If you have a language requirement (instructor must speak fluent French for elderly French-speaking divers, etc.), flag at booking and we’ll match you to the right shop. PADI agency standards require briefings in a language all divers understand; we never run mixed-language briefings that compromise comprehension.
Do I need travel insurance? What about dive insurance specifically?
Strongly recommended — required by some partner shops. DAN Asia Pacific Diver Pro covers chamber treatment + medical evacuation specifically for diving. USD 60-95 for a 7-10 day trip. World Nomads Explorer Plus, AXA Schengen Premium and SafetyWing also offer diving cover with appropriate riders. Confirm depth limit (most cover up to 30-40m recreational), repatriation and chamber evacuation specifically. We recommend uploading your DAN/insurance certificate to your booking record before arrival. Indonesia has chambers in Bali, Surabaya and Manado — Komodo evacuation by medivac flight to Denpasar takes 2-4 hours.
What if I haven’t dived in over a year? Should I do a refresher?
Yes — strongly recommended if your last dive was 12+ months ago. We schedule a refresher dive at Sebayur on day 1 (USD 65 + gear). It covers gear setup, mask flood, regulator recovery, buoyancy check, neutral buoyancy at 5m, and basic skills. Two of three OW divers we audited at booking who were rusty 18+ months had at least one comfort issue on dive 1 if they skipped the refresher. Don’t ego-skip this; your performance on day 2 onwards depends on day 1 confidence.
What’s the cancellation policy?
30% deposit secures booking. Refundable in full up to 45 days before arrival. 50% refundable 30-44 days before arrival. Non-refundable inside 30 days. Force-majeure (typhoon, government closure, volcanic eruption affecting flights) — we offer date-shift to within 12 months at zero penalty. We’ve never invoked the inside-30-days non-refundable clause for genuine medical emergencies; bring DAN documentation and we’ll work with you. Travel insurance with cancel-for-any-reason rider is the safest hedge — typically USD 80-140 add-on to a standard policy.

People also ask about this

What is the best month to dive in Komodo in 2024?
The best months for diving in Komodo National Park are during the dry season, from April to December. This period offers the best visibility, often exceeding 30 meters, and calmer sea conditions. For peak manta ray encounters at Manta Point, consider the months of December through March for the highest concentrations.
How difficult is diving at Batu Bolong?
Diving at Batu Bolong is considered advanced due to potentially strong and unpredictable currents. The site is a pinnacle exposed to open sea, requiring divers to stay on the sheltered side. An Advanced Open Water certification and experience in currents are highly recommended to safely enjoy its incredible marine biodiversity.
What certification is needed for Komodo diving packages?
An Advanced Open Water (AOW) certification is strongly recommended for most Komodo diving packages. This is because premier sites like Castle Rock and Batu Bolong feature strong currents and depths below 18 meters. While Open Water divers can visit some sites, an AOW certification ensures access to all the best locations.
Can you guarantee seeing manta rays at Manta Point?
While sightings are never 100% guaranteed, Manta Point in Komodo offers an exceptionally high probability of encountering reef mantas. These cleaning stations are visited consistently year-round, with peak activity from December to March. Experienced guides on diving packages know the best times and tides to maximize your chances.
What is included in a Komodo diving package for 2024?
A standard 2024 Komodo diving package, typically a liveaboard, includes 3-4 daily dives, tanks, weights, accommodation, and all meals. Park entrance fees, which can be around $30-50 USD per day, dive equipment rental, and crew tips are almost always excluded, so budget for these additional costs.
How strong are the currents at Castle Rock Komodo?
The currents at Castle Rock are famously strong, often requiring divers to use a reef hook to stay in place. These powerful currents are precisely what makes the site a world-class dive, as they attract large pelagic species like giant trevallies, white-tip sharks, and massive schools of fusiliers.
What is the water temperature when diving in Komodo?
The water temperature in Komodo National Park varies between 25°C to 29°C (77°F to 84°F) in the north and central areas like Castle Rock. However, the southern region can have cooler upwellings, dropping temperatures to 20-24°C (68-75°F). A 3mm to 5mm wetsuit is recommended for comfort.
How many days do you need for a Komodo diving trip?
A comprehensive Komodo diving trip that includes top sites like Batu Bolong, Manta Point, and Castle Rock typically requires a liveaboard of at least 4 to 6 days. This duration allows for 10-15 dives, covering the diverse underwater environments of both the central and northern park regions without being rushed.
Are Komodo diving packages suitable for beginners?
Komodo diving packages are generally not recommended for absolute beginners due to the region’s powerful currents. The area is best suited for divers with an Advanced Open Water certification and at least 30-50 logged dives. Some operators may offer specific beginner-friendly routes, but this is not the norm.
Why is Batu Bolong such a famous dive site?
Batu Bolong is famous for its staggering concentration and diversity of marine life packed onto a small rock pinnacle. Protected from fishing, its coral reef is pristine and vibrant. Divers can see everything from tiny pygmy seahorses to giant trevallies, turtles, and thousands of reef fish on a single dive.
When is the peak season for Komodo liveaboards in 2024?
The peak season for Komodo liveaboards in 2024 is from July to September. This period aligns with the dry season, offering the best surface weather and excellent underwater visibility. Due to high demand, it is essential to book packages for these months at least 6-9 months in advance.
